Ethiopia’s Orthopedic Trauma Highlighted at Harvard by Addis Ortho CEO

Addis Ortho is proud to announce that Dr. Samuel Hailu, our CEO and Orthopedic Surgeon, was invited as Guest of Honor and Keynote Speaker at the 21st Augustus A. White III Symposium held on October 15, 2025, hosted at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School in Boston, USA.

This annual symposium brings together global leaders in orthopedic surgery, trauma care, spine surgery, joint replacement, and medical education. It also celebrates the legacy of Dr. Augustus A. White III, a pioneer in orthopedic surgery, champion of diversity in medicine, and one of the most influential figures in American surgical history.

About Dr. Augustus A. White III

Dr. White is the Ellen and Melvin Gordon Distinguished Professor of Medical Education and Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Harvard Medical School. He became the first African American graduate of Stanford Medical School, the first African American surgical resident at Yale, and the first African American department chair at Harvard Medical School. His lifelong commitment to equity, excellence, and patient centered care has shaped multiple generations of surgeons worldwide.

Dr. Samuel’s Presentations at Harvard

Dr. Samuel delivered the Harvard Orthopedic Grand Rounds presentation on “Pelvic and Acetabulum Fracture Management in Resource Limited Settings“. He also presented the symposium’s Keynote Speech on “Neglected Trauma in Ethiopia” and the Life Changing Impact of Joint Replacement, highlighting how modern hip and knee replacement surgeries are transforming patient outcomes in low resource environments.

These talks highlighted real world challenges in Ethiopia and the innovative solutions Addis Ortho has introduced in trauma and reconstructive surgery. Dr. Samuel shared how advanced hip and knee replacement techniques, improved trauma systems, and evidence based orthopedic care are transforming lives across the country.

The event underscored how collaboration, innovation, and shared global experience can strengthen trauma care and orthopedic surgery in low resource settings.

A National Milestone for Ethiopian Orthopedics

Dr. Samuel’s role as Guest of Honor and Keynote Speaker represents a historic milestone not only for Addis Ortho but for Ethiopian orthopedic surgery as a whole. His invitation to one of the world’s most respected medical institutions reflects growing global recognition of Ethiopia’s progress in trauma care, reconstructive surgery, and joint replacement.

Standing on the Harvard stage, Dr. Samuel represented Ethiopia’s orthopedic surgeons and the thousands of patients whose lives have been changed through improved surgical access.

Ethiopia has long faced significant challenges including limited surgical implants, shortages of advanced equipment, and a heavy burden of untreated fractures. Despite these barriers, the country’s orthopedic community has made remarkable progress. Surgeons and innovators in Ethiopia are now contributing to the global orthopedic conversation, and suppliers like Addis Ortho support this work with implants and training.

Dr. Samuel shared, “Representing Ethiopia at Harvard was more than a professional honor. It reminded me that every patient we help walk again is part of Ethiopia’s larger story of progress and hope.”
